Doctor approves high-fat, high-protein diet

Dr Gerhard Schoonbee, a medical doctor in Caledon who works with diabetics and is predisposed to diabetes himself, says the the high-fat, high-protein diet advocated by Professor Tim Noakes has changed his approach to medicine.

He says the diet helped him lose weight, get off his medication for atrial fibrillation and diabetes, cure his sleep apnea, and vastly improve his quality of life.

Coming from a family who ‘loves food’, Dr Schoonbee realised that he had ‘full blown metabolic syndrome‘, a constitution that caused him to gain weight and still battle high cholesterol and diabetes even when eating a low-fat diet.

But after switching his eating pattern to a high-fat high-protein diet recommended by Noakes, he immediately began to lose weight and his cholesterol came down. This led him to believe that the idea of fat being dangerous is ‘a myth’.

‘It’s the carbohydrates that are killing us more than anything else,’ he says.

The diet allowed Dr Schoonbee to completely wean himself off his medication – and has ‘changed his approach to medicine’.

‘You can’t cure everything with medication,’ he says. ‘When people walk into my surgery I now have an alternative to offer them.’
